What do you do with holey socks? Can you name 5 ways to reuse worn or odd socks?
In tackling creative ways to reuse old socks and nothing is going to waste, our “Put A Sock In It” event last month has gathered some community members to make together and explore various ways to transform unwearable socks.
First, let’s talk about the general properties of socks -- they are stretchy, sometimes colourful and generally have good water absorption. How can these properties fit into these “new” items that can nourish our everyday? Our making session has covered a few --
1. Sock Monkey
A good cuddly friend can be made with simple materials like two old socks and some old pillow stuffing. Have you tried making one yourself? It is very satisfying and adds so much sentimental value for what used to be unloved. You can find the instructions here, make one for yourself and a friend.

2. Finger Looming
For the stretchy material of socks, it can make perfect finger looms. Cut the body of the sock into rings and with a very simple looming technique, you can make a extended robe and that can be the basis of rugs, belts, even plant hangers. Sillai has a good demonstration of the technique here.

3. Sprouting bed
The good water absorption property has made a sock to be an ideal fabric as a sprouting bed. We gave the sprout pet faces. It is a great activity to do with kids to introduce growing.

4. Draft Excluder
Draft proofing your doors and windows can make such a big difference in winter. Draft excluder is something that you do not need to purchase. Attach a few sock parts together and maybe you might give it some snake features too.

5. Rags for cleaning
