CHINA THROUGH THE LENS OF JOHN THOMSON 1868-1872 (Part)

Recently I borrowed this photo collection from Ricefield Arts Library Room. It was such a interesting book recording China during 1868-1872 (Late Qing Dynasty) through John Thomson’s lens.

“Had the great venetian traveler, Marco Polo, been able to confirm by a series of photographs his story of the wonders of Cathay, his fair fame would have escaped the discredit cast upon it for centuries, and indeed until comparatively recent investigation confirmed his story.”

— JohnThomson

Let’s have a look at China at that time.

Thomson traveled around China and recorded different ladies, street sellers, monks, etc.

Meanwhile Thomson is interested in traditional Chinese dress, decorations, architecture as well as music instruments.

What you could appreciate here is just the tip of the iceberg. This bilingual book is definitely my favourite book for the year. If you are also interested in Chinese history and culture, welcome to Ricefield Arts Library Room to borrow this book. For more information, please click here.
